Surfin’ in Tofino

Tofino is magic. A must visit utopia on Vancouver island - Tofino is a special place. Play in the ocean, get cozy around a campfire, and relax to the sound of waves crashing on the shore.

Getting there

Getting to Tofino from Vancouer is half the fun. We always book a ferry out of the Horseshoe bay ferry terminal to Nanaimo (Depature Bay). These days it’s always best to book your spot ahead of time - this way you’ll avoid waiting several sailings.

The ferry trip is so special. If we catch an early sailing, we love getting a full breakfast from the cafeteria on board. It’s a nice treat for the 1.5 hour crossing. Make sure you pop out on the deck for some whale watching - its very common to see ocean life on the way over to the island.

The drive

Once you land in Nanaimo, you’ll start to feel like you’re in another world. Island life is slow and easy - it’s the best. The drive is about 3 hours without any stops, but trust me, you’ll want to have a few. These are some of our must see’s along the way:

Goats on a roof country market

Cathedral grove - The giant Redwood forest

The wild pacific trail in Ucluelet

Pacific Rim National Park (arguably the most beautiful beach in Canada)

Where to stay

There aren’t many camping spots in Tofino as it’s quite a small town. If you can get a spot, the Pacific Rim national park is incredible, but it books up really quickly.

We typically stay at the beautiful and accommodating Surf Grove campground. The campground is right on the beach at Cox bay, steps away from the ocean. You can even rent surfboards and get lessons from them. They have everything you need for the full Tofino experience.

Things to do

Tofino is known for it’s surfing. As the infamous Canadian Ska band used to say - ‘I’m going surfin’, in Tofino!’. So if you’re up for it - you should definitely give it a try. If you’re not - there is still plenty to do.

Many people visit Tofino during storm season - which is the spring and fall. Sitting on the beach and watching the aggressive waves crash can mesmerize you for hours.

Tofino boasts some beautiful hikes, and has a walking and bike path connecting the village to Uculete.

You can’t leave tofino without getting a taco or burrito from Tacofino. A staple in Vancouver cuisine, this is the original food truck where it all started. Get ready to stand in line - but it’s worth it!

Happy camping!
